Mexicans’ concerns about corruption have reached their highest level during Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency, according to recent polls. Escalating scandals involving high-ranking officials, including accusations against a state governor by the United States, have intensified public apprehension.

A survey conducted by LatAm Pulse for Bloomberg News this May revealed that 62% of respondents identified corruption as Mexico’s most pressing issue. This marks a 3-point increase from April and 16 points higher than February. The spike in public awareness is largely tied to recent high-profile corruption cases, including a fuel smuggling operation involving Navy officers, customs agents, and business executives. Another major incident involves Sinaloa’s Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, who faces U.S. charges of conspiring with drug cartels.
Although these scandals surfaced, her approval rating started to rebound, rising to 53% in May after reaching a previous low, while her disapproval dropped by 5 points to 38%. Many political analysts attribute this upswing to the perception that she is not viewed as directly implicated in the events, despite them occurring under her administration.
Escalating scrutiny continues to build around Morena and Sheinbaum’s leadership
Although Morena, Sheinbaum’s political party, continues to be viewed by many as the main force confronting corruption, 54% of Mexicans contend that the party grapples with its own ethical issues; this view has heightened the spotlight on Sheinbaum, especially since one of the implicated officials, Rocha Moya, belongs to Morena, and as the U.S. presses for stricter anti-cartel measures, Sheinbaum must navigate both international pressure and domestic criticism to preserve her party’s credibility.
Societal Views Regarding Safety and U.S. Engagement
The survey also indicates mixed attitudes toward American participation in Mexico’s campaign against organized crime, pointing out that while 69% of Mexicans approve U.S. cooperation limited to intelligence exchange, public sentiment is divided over deeper involvement, with 47% backing the deployment of U.S. personnel in security missions and 48% opposing such a role.
Sheinbaum’s handling of U.S.-Mexico security relations received moderate approval, with 46% describing her performance as good, compared to 32% who rated it poorly. Recent reports of alleged covert CIA operations to dismantle cartels have fueled debates about sovereignty and the extent of U.S. involvement.
