The Popular Party (PP) is intensifying its political offensive against corruption cases linked to the PSOE and the current government. The PP’s spokesperson in the Senate, Alicia García, announced two key appearances within the investigation committee led by the Upper Chamber: the Attorney General, Teresa Peramato, will be questioned on June 19, while the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will appear on June 30.
These appearances are related to the case of Leire Díez, a former socialist activist known by her nickname “the Ferraz plumber.” According to the PP, Díez held meetings with key figures —such as the former Deputy Attorney General, Diego Villafañe, and the head of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González— reportedly to influence judicial investigations in favor of the administration.
Moreover, the PP points directly to what they describe as a corruption scheme involving purported efforts to pressure judges and prosecutors, tying these actions to senior PSOE leaders, including President Pedro Sánchez. Alicia García publicly claimed that “Leire devised it, García Ortiz carried it out, and Sánchez gave the order,” alluding to notes discovered in Díez’s agenda that feature the initials “P.S.”
Links to Additional Corruption Incidents
The committee also plans to investigate links between the Leire case and previous scandals such as the ‘Delcygate’ —a controversy involving Venezuela’s then-Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, which, according to García, “was the origin of an entire network of corruption, influence trafficking, and abuse of power” surrounding the PSOE.
Other scheduled appearances include Manuel Aarón Fajardo, a key figure in a money laundering case attributed to former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and Zapatero’s personal secretary, Gertrudis Alcázar.
Amid these allegations and the ongoing inquiries, the Popular Party appears intent on sustaining pressure on the government in an effort to undermine the PSOE as the political showdown grows increasingly intense.
