The Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Spanish Civil Guard is examining a potential corruption network linked to the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), and the company Tubos Reunidos, focusing on the €112.8 million in public assistance the State Industrial Participations Society (SEPI) awarded to the Basque firm during the pandemic.
According to GEDAR LANGILE KAZETA, the allocation process for this funding in 2021 was allegedly overseen by former PSOE member Leire Díez and Santos Cerdán, who are suspected of receiving financial compensation for facilitating the operation. Additionally, the investigation is examining the alleged mediation role of the PNV, which reportedly intervened to help Tubos Reunidos secure this public rescue fund.
Amid these accusations, political tensions are escalating. While EH Bildu reaffirms its support for the government, the PNV has called for early elections, citing the growing difficulties faced by the Spanish government in legislating and the continuous corruption scandals. PNV spokesperson Maribel Vaquero urged Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to “call for elections” and clarify the allegations involving political forces.
The case casts doubt on the transparency of how public funds were used during the pandemic to mitigate its effects, adding further pressure on Sánchez’s leadership.
